July General Meeting Jeni Bates

July 9, 2025 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

You are in for a treat with this multi-talented artist.  Jeni, draws, creates, writes poetry with her style she calls “Refracturing”  technique. The refracturing collage technique, particularly as described by artist Jeni Bate, involves creating a new artwork by first creating a scene or image (often by painting it multiple times with variations), then cutting it up, and finally reassembling the fragments into a collage.

Key aspects of this technique:
  • Fragmentation and Reassembly: The core of the technique involves breaking down a cohesive image into pieces (like cutting or tearing), and then reassembling those pieces to create a new composition.
  • Creating a “Different Version”: The goal is not just to recreate the original image, but to transform it into something new and different through the process of fracturing and reassembly.
  • Abstraction and Energy: This technique can abstract the original image, giving it a more dynamic and energetic quality.
  • Application: While Bate’s definition focuses on the wholesale reworking of a single image, the technique can also be applied to individual elements within a larger collage.
